Making Cold Calls. Hello? Hello?

I was able to work remote so went to the Starbucks by our house. I’m an Administrative Assistant at this small financial planning firm. My bosses, bless their hearts, are these 2 older sweet men. They’re both old fashioned and do not believe in digital marketing so we do everything the old fashioned way as well. Our current clients are lawyers and doctors… They also are desperate to get new clients. Well yesterday, the oldest one called me, saying he wanted to introduce our services/products to auto body repair shops. I asked how he would want to do that.

He replied:

“well you can google auto body repair shops in our area and make cold calls… we have very, very good scripts for you.”

FUCK! I said to myself.

I hate everything about telemarketing and cold calls. It is really annoying when i’m in the middle of doing something, and someone calls or knocks on my door to try to see things. Or worse, if I’m waiting for an important phone call, and instead, it is a telemarketer on the line??!

I feel like my space and privacy are invaded! If i want something, i will go online and start doing my own research and will reach out if i need or I will ask families and friends. I don’t want people to come to my door, and tell me what they think i need, when i didn’t ask for it in the first place.

“Ok, send me the email and i will see”.

10 minute later, i received the email below from him with subject:

SUBJECT: “AUTO BODY SHOP SCRIPT”

Hello, my name is …..at……  I’m calling on behalf of the owners of our company ….They work with several Body Shops in your area and would like to schedule a 15 minute meeting with your owner or manager to discuss the new benefits they are offering.

Since their calendar is filling up- I’d like to pencil your business in so they can stop by for fifteen minutes to explain their strategy.  What’s a better time for you morning or afternoon?

Once they answer Morning or afternoon- book it.  You may get not interested- too busy- already have an advisor- just say I understand but they will be in your neighborhood next week- surely you have 15 minutes to hear about the great things we’re doing for other body shops like yours.  Keep pushing til you get a yes or they hang up.

Good luck!  You have this!  Talk slow and deliberate!

Cheers!

Anyways, I went online and took the names of the bloody auto body shops in our area. I practiced the “script” over and over, cleared my voice, to make sure it sounded sexy.

I dialed the number. It rang and was picked up within 3 seconds.

Repair guy: “it’s a great day here at …auto body shop, where we treat all cars like family —how may I help you”?

Me (sounding not so sexy): “Hello, my name is …..at……I’m calling on behalf of the owners of our company ….They work with several Body Shops in your area and would like to schedule a 15 minute meeting with your owner or manager to discuss the new benefits they are offering.

Since their calendar is filling up- I’d like to pencil your business in so they can stop by for fifteen minutes to explain their strategy.

All of a sudden it went silent.

Me: “hello? …hello?

They hung on me!! omfg!! I didn’t know who i was upset with more, my boss or the dude who hung on me. As soon as i was done, i told my bosses they should to hire a telemarketer, or something, like a robot… because i couldn’t do it ever again. I used to hang up on people all the time, but this time, i was the one who was hung up on. I sure got the taste of my own medicine yesterday and it was not pretty. Next time a salesman calls, I will try to be nicer, or at least, let them finish their fucking sentences!
